2006 Canadian Horseshoe Pitching Championships
A tournament story

The 2006 Canadian Championships were held in the resort village of Manitou Beach, Saskatchewan from July 26-29. Held for the 4th time in Saskatchewan (first time was 1984 in Regina), and 3rd time in beautiful Manitou Beach, they were co-hosted by Horseshoe Saskatchewan and the Manitoba H.P.A. The "land of the healing waters" saw the following champions crowned in eight divisions:
Duncan McKENZIE, New Waterford, N.S. (Men) 69.26%
Sylvianne MOISAN, L'Epiphanie, Que. (Women) 80.00%
Bryce THOMAS, Cochrane, Alb. (Jr Boys) 37.88%
Sheena DUBYK, Prince Albert, Sask. (Jr Girls) 15.50%
Jasmin DEMMANS, Watrous, Sask. (Pee Wees) 2.91%
Earl VANDERHART, Brampton, Ont. (Sr 40) 35.50%
Red GILMORE, Olds, Alb. (Sr 30) 60.97%
Ida BOSCHMAN, Prince George, B.C. (Sr Ladies) 56.67%

The complete results are available here, or if you prefer you can also take a look at the game by game summaries.
Sylvianne Moisan (Women's division), was the only successful defending champion. Helped by the high overall average (80.0%), she won her sixth consecutive Women’s Canadian Title and 11th overall. The runner-up this time was Lucy Thibault. Sylvianne won all her games but had some tough wins. Ida Boschman gave her the best opposition in one game recording 78.75% in 80 shoes, and losing 38-42 vs Sylvianne's 81.25%. Ida pitched an impressive string of doubles in that game (see scoresheet here). Sylvianne was the only undefeated champ along with Junior Boys champion Bryce Thomas. Bryce edged Donovan MacDonald, cousin of the newly crowned Junior Girls champion Sheena Dubyk. Jasmin Demmans won the PeeWee Division. All 3 competitors in that division ended in a tie with 5 wins and 5 losses!

The Men's competition was also very well-matched. In his 4th try to win the title, Duncan McKenzie became the first Maritime player to win the Canadian Men's title. His two losses were against Colin Finnie (rd 7), and Andre Leclerc (rd 11). The game against Andre went 84 shoes, the longest of the tournament (see scoresheet here). Andre (76.19%) beat Duncan (72.61%) 42-33 to then take the lead by one game. But Andre started the last day by losing his first two games to Tom Gallina and Colin Finnie, while Duncan won all of his, including back to back wins against the same Tom and Colin (rds 15-16). The first place was confirmed when Duncan defeated Stan Leis (last round). Duncan recorded the high average of the men's (69.26%) and high game of all the participants (90.9%). Defending champ Colin Finnie lost his last three games to end in 4th place.

Red Gilmore won the Senior Men's 30' division for the first time. He won his last four games while runner-up Neil Yaskow lost his last round game to former champ Wilf Gregory (preventing a playoff). Red also won the Alberta provincials and Western Classic earlier this season. Earl Vanderhart, known also as "Santa Claus", captured the Senior Men's 40' title. It was all decided in a playoff game with Larry Markle. Earl won 44-33 in 62 shoes. Ida Boschman was crowned Senior Ladies champion by edging defending champ Bonnie Clemmensen (both played in the Women's A).

At the banquet held Saturday evening at historic Danceland (built in 1928 and "Home of the World Famous Dance Floor Built on Horsehair"), winners and champions received their awards. The beautiful trophies were made by Tammy Christensen. Among other special presentations made, Shirley Ann Fisher and Dale Squires received the Sharon Ellison Award, presented by Charolette Demmans. Russ Christopher was inducted into the Horseshoe Canada Hall of Fame as an outstanding male player. We had special visitors at the tournament. Among them, Kevin Fisher and his wife Desiree. Kevin (son of Ivan and Shirley Ann) is a former Manitoba champion who could still compete in the Men's division and fare very well. We were also very happy to see Marvin Ellison on Saturday, along with his sister Ruby Finnie. Marvin is seriously ill and we all wish him well. Other special but typical visitors in Saskatchewan were a mule deer (during the opening ceremonies) and the wind on Saturday. As mentioned by Jack E. Adams, after the people complained about warm weather, he ordered cool weather for Friday. After people complained about the bugs, he ordered wind for Saturday. The Lucky Horseshoe Saloon was again the scene of many great moments. The whole Manitou Beach atmosphere is ideal to host a Canadian Championships and spend a great vacation. Thanks to all (volunteers, sponsors) who helped make this 2006 tournament a success!
