Sylvianne Moisan (Women's division), was again the only successful defending champion. Helped by the high overall average (79.9%), she won her seventh consecutive Women’s Canadian Title and 12th overall. The strong group which featured 3 women over 70% for the first time since 1995, was marked by the return of Sandra Janssens, in her first appearance since ...1995. As in 2006, Lucy Thibault finished runner-up to Sylvianne. Sylvianne was the only undefeated champ along with Junior Girls champion Joanna Vienneau. Joanna edged Sheena Dubyk who had won that title in 2006. The Junior Boys division was well-matched and necessitated a playoff to crown the winner: Joe Parker defeated Travis Bowman in a close game to capture his first title. Travis we heard is in his first year of competition and not more than 12 year-old. He recorded the high average of the juniors with 51.6%. Zachary Steenbergen won the PeeWee division. Like Joe Parker, he's part of a large delegation of 20 juniors brought by Keith Lindsay, the man also behind the bid to host the 2009 Canadian Championships in Aylmer, Ontario. Those Aylmer juniors brought the total to 37, the largest group of juniors EVER at the Canadians (there were 35 in 1987 and 1984). What a difference can make the actions of ONE individual!

The Men's competition was also very well-matched and resulted in a playoff when Adam Ellis, who had lost to Michel Forget and Tom Gallina, defeated Duncan McKenzie in the last round to force a playoff. Colin Finnie, who had lost his opening game 30-42 to Alvin (68.4%) in 76 shoes and round 9 to Adam (68.4%) 32-45 also in 76 shoes, had given Duncan his first loss in round 11 by 41-26. While high-average Adam was waiting in the finals, Colin (69.2%) eliminated defending champion Duncan McKenzie 41-25 in 52 shoes. Colin carried on in the final game with a 75% to capture his 6th Men's title in a one-sided 41-8 win over 2001 champion Adam Ellis. Duncan had a high game of 84.1% against Tom Gallina.

Keith Lindsay won the Senior Men's 30' division for the first time, eclipsing defending champion Red Gilmore. Charlie Fromm edged defending champion Earl "Santa Claus" Vanderhart to capture his second Senior Men's 40' title. Bonnie Clemmensen was crowned Senior Ladies champion ahead of Heather Morrison, Angeline Moisan and Marie Hartman.

At the banquet held Saturday evening at the Moose Lodge Family Center, home of the Woodstock horseshoe league, winners and champions received their awards. Among other special presentations made, Dorothy Butts and Clark Brown were inducted into the Horseshoe Canada Hall of Fame as outstanding organizers/promoters. This great annual event is the occasion to meet our friends and make new ones. Some of them we see after a long absence. Among those are Robert Riehl who could be seen around the courts on the final day of competition. Also Bob and Audrey Brownridge from Hamilton. The media coverage was excellent with daily articles published in the Woodstock Sentinel Review. Thanks to all (volunteers, sponsors) who helped make this 2007 tournament a success!

About the AGM:

One member of the executive is being replaced: Jack E. Adams (President) by Dave Kilbourn. Also, Dianne Beck will be officially replaced by Wally Arnold. Wally and Sheryl did a tremendous job as co-tournament directors this year. We take this occasion to thank Jack E. Adams and Dianne Beck for their dedication to the game. Hopefully we'll see you again at our annual family reunion!
The 2008 Canadian Championships will be held in Calgary, Alberta from August 12-16. The 2009 championships will be held in Aylmer, Ontario. Note that the entry fee to the Canadians will be $70 instead of $50 but will include money for the scorekeepers and judges (players won't have to carry that money anymore).
