NOTE: There were 48 pitchers in preliminary rounds divided in 8 groups, playing 5 games, with the top 24 moving into 4 playoff groups (2 for the A Class and 2 for the B). So, the 12 players in the A class were divided into 2 groups with each group winner playing off for the title in a best of three games on Saturday . Elmer Hohl won group 1 with 5-0 and 76.9%. Other players in the group were Harburn, Blackman, Woodward, Mawson and Schneider. Hohl’s best game was 91.3% (42 out of 46) in his first game of the day (51-10) against Woodward. Longest game was 94 shoes between Hohl (68.1) and Harburn (68.1%) won by Elmer 50-47! Elmer’s other game over 80% was 82.5% against Schneider in 40 shoes. So, Elmer barely escaped from his group, being 3 points away from elimination by legendary Harburn. Blackman also gave him a tough game bowing 31-51 in 78 shoes (69.2 vs 76.9). Dean McLaughlin won group 2 with 5-0 and a record performance of 81.93% out of 238 shoes. Dean’s low game was 77.8% in his win 50-17 against Boa. He had 80.6% against Black (73.6%) in 72 shoes, 81.6% vs Faint, 82.6% vs Gould and 92.9% in his fourth game vs Commanda (26 out of 28, shortest game).
The best of 3 went to the limit with Elmer scoring 136 points to Dean’s 121, ringing the stake 232 times out of 294 shots for 78.91%. Dean shot 225 ringers out of 294 for 76.53%. The last game went 110 shoes, Hohl winning 50-48 after trailing 48-42. The tournament was conducted by the CHPA with Ted Burrows in charge. Among other players in the B class, all representing Hamilton, were John Boswell, Frank Corbin, Charlie Lentz and Jack Lentz. Also listed in a Toronto Star article by Harold Blackman are Jack Boa and Fred Harburn, described as Western Ontario doubles champions, and Graham Mawson, Toronto champion. Blackman also mentioned in his column that Elmer had 34 consecutive ringers in the playoff while Dean fired 27 consecutive ringers. “We regret that the 3rd and 4th men were not in the finals; the result may have been the same and yet, who knows; next time it looks like a 4-man play-off. Many enjoyed their 5 games, more than a 100 shoe qualifying round; we can see merits in both methods”
