CLAYTON ENGLISH


1991 - Clayton ENGLISH, Ninette, MAN.

Born in Brandon, Manitoba on August 20, 1921. He passed away March 12, 2000 at 78 years of age. Wife: Dodie. He threw the one and a quarter turn, right handed. He started playing in organized horseshoe pitchin in 1974 when he moved to Victoria, B.C. He then returned to Manitoba in 1977, living in Souris for a few years, then returned to B.C. He retired in 1987 and moved back to Ninette, Manitoba.

In his first try at the Canadian championships in 1975, he finished 4th. In his second try, he became at 54 years old the first Westerner to win the men's championship. Clayton, 13 years after his memorable 1976 win, won his second title at 67 years of age in 1989 when he defeated Eric Beaudoin in the playoff. He was runner-up two times (1977 and 1988). He took part in 15 Canadian championships from 1975 to 1994. His personal high being 72.84% in 1988. His high game was 82.1 in 1992. Set a record for the most shoes pitched in the men's division with 1042 in 1988.

He was B.C. provincial champion 6 times (1975-76-82-83-86-87), recording the province high of 73.8% in 1986. He was also Manitoba champion 3 times (1989-93-94), once again recording the provincial high of 66.5% in 1989. He won the B.C. International Open in 1985 and 1986. The Men's C Class at the 1977 World Tournament. Pitched a perfect game in the 1986 Victoria Open.
