ROBERT RICHEY

1998 - Robert W. "Bob" RICHEY, Halifax, N.S.

Bob started playing horseshoes in 1946 as a recreation activity after returning from army service in Italy during WWII. He organized local leagues in Halifax from 1950 to 1972 during which time he was able to convince the local municipal departments to construct 12 regulation horseshoe courts which became the Halifax Horseshoe Club and the beginning of a provincial association.

In 1973, the Nova Scotia Horseshoe Players Association (NSI-IPA) joined the Maritime Horseshoe Players Association (MHPA). In 1979, the NSHPA affiliated with Horseshoe Canada after Bob's first visit to the Canadian Championships in Ottawa that year. Bob was president of the HSHPA from 1983 to 1989. It was in 1989 that the Canadian Championships were held in Halifax and Bob was the co-ordinator of the event that was very successful in all aspects of organization, sponsorship and competition. Diane Cantin pitched her 100% game at these championships and Bob immediately had a commemorative plaque made and presented it to Diane at the closing ceremonies. From 1979 to 1990, except for 1988, Bob competed in the Canadian Championships and was also the NSHPA delegate at the Horseshoe Canada meetings. Bob received the "Sportsman of the Year" award in 1985 from the MHPA.

It was through Bob's tireless efforts that many clubs were organized throughout Nova Scotia. Major tournaments were held indoors so the weather was not a factor. Bob continues to keep an interest in the sport and still competes in local tournaments. He also continues to support the NHPA.
