I'll never forget the first I played against legendary Elmer Hohl (in Victoria 1982). Two years later, I played against another of our legends: Dean McLaughlin! After an absence of about 5 years, Dean was back to competition in this major tournament staged at the Hamilton Horseshoe Club. Eight of the top 10 players went on to average over 70%! In one of the strongest tournaments ever played on Canadian soil, Dean McLaughlin finished 3rd with an average of 75.3%! When I met Dean on the courts, I had just pitched a perfect game (round 3 vs Tom Gallina). We both had a slow start in our game but both ended it with 24 ringers out of the last 28 shoes. I still remember Dean cooly whistling between ends. It should be mentioned that a special rule was used to accelerate the games: 1 point each was awarded for each fourdead, up until one of the two players reached 30 points. Oh, I almost forgot to tell you who won the tournament! It was my first tournament in which I averaged over 80%, but still needed a playoff to win first place...
