From L-R (back row): Gaetan Dallaire, Bill Vanderburg, Fernand Thibeault, Elmer Hohl
(front row): Kevin Fisher, Lavergne Butcher, Andre Leclerc, Clayton English.
That year, Steve Hohl, whop topped section two, won the 1983 Canadian title defeating Fernand Thibeault in a record 138-shoe game final.
Lavergne Butcher pictured above is still active today. He was runner-up to Elmer Hohl at the Ontario provincials also in 1983.
Bill Vanderburg passed away recently in Kitchener on April 8 in his 71st year (see Toll of Time section). The great lefthander threw a high 1 and a quarter turn.
He was taught that high turn shoe by Phil Gunn. Former member of the fame Scarborough horseshoe club, Bill took over the Dean horseshoe company
(founded by Dean McLaughlin) and developped several models. His great friend Tom Gallina has continued the business.
Even despite his failing health, Bill still had that great sense of humour. He will be missed...
