1996 and 1997 Yukon Territory Champions: Dwayne Backstrom (Men) & Nellie Backstrom (Ladies), with the Jim Neely Memorial trophy

Dwayne & Nellie Backstrom, from Whitehorse became the first (and only) players from Yukon to participate at the Canadian Championships in 1998 in Victoria, B.C.
The Yukon Horseshoe Association was established in Whitehorse on September 18, 1990. Following contacts between Jim Neely of Beaver Creek and Ed Murray, the association then affiliated with Horseshoe Canada. A driving force behind the Yukon association formation, Jim Neely died suddenly in September 1990. In commemorating Neely's efforts, the Yukon association established the Jim Neely Memorial Trophy for the annual championships. The first Yukon Championships were held at Beaver Creek on August 31 and local pitchers took top honors in the men's and women's divisions. Vi Campbell (Women's) and Larry Haner (Men's) were the first champions crowned in 1991. Archie Lafleur (pictured left) and Nellie Backstrom were the last champions in 1999 as no tournament has been held since then. Hopefully they will be revived soon...
