1930s: George Craggs and ...
This picture was probably taken in the late 1930s and shows George Craggs (left) and an "unknown" horseshoe pitcher. Could you help us identify him?
George Craggs was a star horseshoe pitcher from the 1930s. After placing third in 1932, and runner-up in 1933, he won the
1934 Canadian Men's Championship.
He was also 4th in 1937 and 3rd in 1940, probably his last participation. That year, George Craggs placed 8th with 60.1% at the Canadian Open won by New Jersey's Larry Mahoney.
A tall skinny fellow from Toronto, Craggs threw a high 3/4 turn.
He also won the 1934 and 1938 Canadian doubles, respectively with James Daniels and Joe Jeffries. We thought the player pictured above would be Joe Jeffries, but their cups are different.
Craggs is thought to be 1933 Ontario champion, a title won at the International Plowing Match. But other sources state that James Daniels won the title that year at the Arena Gardens in Toronto.
George Craggs did win the Ontario provincial doubles in 1937 with Jack Lovett (the unknown player pictured above?).
