Steve Hohl and Hilda Hohl - (Aylmer, 2009)

This picture was also taken during the banquet following the 2009 Canadian Championships. It shows Steve Hohl, 2009 Horseshoe Canada Hall of Fame inductee, with his mother Hilda Hohl. The induction speech was given by Stan Leis, a good friend of Steve. Though he played in the shadow of his legendary father Elmer Hohl, Steve had an impressive horseshoe pitching career that made him a very deserving inductee as an outstanding player. See Steve's profile in the hall of fame section. He was 1978 World Junior Boys champion, but also 4-time Canadian Junior Boys Champion and 1983 Canadian Men's Champion. An impressive feat giving a good overview of his caliber would certainly be the seven consecutive years in which he averaged over 70% at the Elmer Hohl Ringer Classic. A streak that very few Canadians have been able to achieve.

Steve Hohl gave a memorable speech in Aylmer. He mentioned how horseshoe pitching is a challenging and humbling game. Perhaps thinking that his own high level of play would stay much longer, he expressed regrets for not having taken the game more seriously at times when he was pitching so well. His advice to the younger generation of Ontario pitchers would be to give it their best shot while they can. Steve had to go through major surgeries in one of his eyes this summer (torn retina). But he also announced that him and Sandy Janssens will marry each other this fall. Congratulations!
