Instructions for judges in Horseshoe Pitching

The following instructions have been modified by Sheila McGrath-Leis from the "Horseshoe Pitching Technical Manual - by Paul Carriere". (August 29, 2002). Sheila is a member of the Horseshoe Canada Hall of Fame.
This instruction sheet can be printed and handed out to each of your judges as a reminder. See also the NHPA guidelines for judges.

  1. Judges should be experienced tournament players.
  2. Judges must be aware of all the rules and regulations for tournaments.
  3. Judges must carry an equipment kit which will consist of one straight edge, one 6" rule, one 6" spread caliper. Also required is a small spade, or digging tool to remove clay when necessary to locate the points of a shoe for a ringer check or closeness. A small towel is great for a kneeling pad.
  4. Judges must take great care when checking shoes.
  5. The stake must never be touched at any times while shoes are being judged.
  6. Never pry against the stake with digging tool to remove clay.
  7. A ringer is considered on when the straight edge does not rock on the peg. A 3-point touch is not a ringer.
  8. When a judge is summoned, both players involved should stand at the back of the court until they are summoned by the judge indicating his decision.
  9. Judges may call another judge to confirm their calls.
  10. Judges must report serious irregularities or infractions immediately to the tournament committee whose rulings will be final.
  11. Judges will monitor players for foul line infractions.
  12. Judges shall report immediately to the tournament director any scoring irregularities by biased or incompetent scorekeepers.
  13. Judges will supervise the distribution of the score sheets to each court in play and their return to tournament statistician.
  14. Judges shall wear distinguishable markers such as red striped vests.
  15. Judges must always be aware of other pitchers when summoned to a court for judging. Be court courteous.

Failure to wollow these instructions, the tournament officials may have you replaced as a scorekeeper.
