Coverage about Sylvianne Moisan's 2001 World and Canadian title

There was some interesting coverage following Sylvianne Moisan's titles in August 2001. To have a Canadian crowned World champion is certainly a good opportunity to provide exposure to our sport. Here are some examples:

  • Article by Ronald King in LaPresse (August 21, 2001). This is one of the two major Montreal daily french newspapers. Here is a translation of that article.
  • The article also appeared on "Cyberpresse.ca", the electronic version.
  • Sylvianne Moisan appeared on TV on "Matin Express", the live morning show, broadcasted throughout all Canada on RDI and Radio-Canada. (August 22, 2001).
  • Sylvianne was then interviewed the next morning by CBC radio (August 23, 2001).

All of these are due to Sam Tomasevic and Billie Sue Pennington's work. Sam sent a news release to LaPresse newspaper, which resulted in the afore mentioned coverage.

On Wednesday August 29, 2001 a feature article was published in the Montreal Gazette (montrealgazette.com). This EXCELLENT article, written by Dave Stubbs (possibly related to Jack Stubbs, Canadian Men's B champion in 1949), can be seen at the following address:

On August 30, 2001, Sylvianne was interviewed live on "The Team", Canada's Sports Radio Network broadcasted in Toronto, Ottawa, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Peterborough, Kingston, Montreal, Halifax, Waterloo. Their website is: www.theteamradio.com. This interview on Gene Valaitis show (11:50am) is a result of Dave Stubbs article in The Gazette.

Translation (by Andre Leclerc) of the article "Un talent naturel" written by Ronald King (La Presse, August 21, 2001).

    A natural talent

"It's something natural for me..." said the modest Sylvianne Moisan, from Chertsey, world horseshoe pitching champion for the second consecutive year.

And we have to believe her when she talks about natural talent.

"I have Crohn's disease and last April I had a part of my intestine removed. Consequently I didn't train much this summer. But we headed however to Minnesota in my mother's camper/trailer. I wanted to participate at the World championship and try to finish the tournament, that's all."

And Mrs Moisan won everything, no later than last week, against incredulous adversaries. A purse of $ 3200 US in addition.

The clan left as soon for Wellesley, in Ontario, where were played the Canadian championships. The "clan", is husband Andre Leclerc, Sandra, 3-year-old, and the grand-parents Moisan. "My father had time to take care of the little one as he's the only member of the family not pitching."

In Wellesley, in the very first round, Sylvianne Moisan showed that she had not lost her accuracy by completing a perfect game, the second in the history of the Canadian championships. It means 26 "ringers" in a row, folks, and try to match that...

"The purse was $ 383 CAN. It doesn't cover our expenses of course, but we do it because we like to pitch horseshoes as a family party. We go to about ten tournaments a year. Normally, I train three times a week, about 30 minutes each time. The American champion, Sue Snyder, once told me that she trained a lot more than me..."

Sylvianne Moisan's next test will be more arduous: another major surgery to repair her bowel.

Finally, we have to say that in the Canadian finals, last Saturday, she beat... her mother Angeline.

Just to say that natural talent doesn't come as a godsend.
