Csanadi rings up another championship
Courtice senior dominates Ontario's horseshoe pits
COURTICE -- At 71 years old Steve Csanadi is probably about as good as they come when throwing horseshoes.
The Courtice resident recently captured his second consecutive provincial championship in men's horseshoes during an event in Alymer.
At the championships, Csanadi, who plays competitively out of a club in Peterborough, dominated the A-division, tossing a 58.47 per cent average in the 30-foot bracket en route to going a flawless 8-0 to retain his championship.
"Everything went really well for me in Alymer which is satisfying because I put a lot of work into it," he said with a thick Hungarian accent. "I've played the Ontario championships the last three years and won it twice, so I am doing okay. And I have fun with it too."
Last year he won his first provincial title at an event in Belleville.
After that event Csanadi eyed the possibility of attending the World Championships, but he appears to have since changed his goal despite earning the trip to Calgary for the 2008 championships via his win in Alymer.
"I think I've changed my mind," he said after this most recent championship win. "I think I am going to go for a Canadian Championship first. I don't want to go out there because it is too far."
It's been quite an impressive few years in the horseshoe pits for Csanadi. He says the sport first grabbed his interest "about eight years ago at the cottage." Since then he has shuffled from a club in Lakefield to his current one, the Peterborough Horseshoe Club, which he travels to several times a week.
He credits the switch to Peterborough as a big reason for his success over the past couple years.
"The Lakefield club wasn't working all that well for me because I kept getting better. Once I got to Peterborough I became good enough to play at the provincial level," he said.
