December 13, 2011 - John HASELL, Victoria, B.C.:
We are sad to report the passing of John Hasell on December 13, 2011. John developed a computer program to keep proper stats for horseshoes, called the Shoes program. First used in BC and at the Canadians in Victoria 1994, it spread to other provinces and the States where it is still used today. In 1996, he also developed the first program used for Canstats, spending endless hours of work and consulting with Sam Tomasevic to put the program together. Born December 30, 1930 in England, John Hasell died at home in Victoria, BC after a courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife Sue of 52 years, daughters Penny (Ian), Kit (Jeremy) and Merion (Dave), and grandchildren Eric and Julia. The obit can be seen here: http://www.mccallbros.com/john-antony-edward-hasell/.
On behalf of Horseshoe Canada we would like to extend our deepest condoleances to all the family and thank John for his huge contribution to our game. Like Sam mentioned: I don't know what a lot of us would have done had it not been for John. We would like to thank John for what he did for all of us in horseshoes, not just in Canada but the United States. Rest in peace my friend, we will miss you.

August 31, 2011 - Eric BEAUDOIN and Yvon BEAUDOIN, St-Nicolas, Que.:
Members who have been around since more than two decades probably remember Eric Beaudoin and his father Yvon. Many members of the Beaudoin family pitched horseshoes actively in tournaments from 1981 up to 1993. Sadly, four family members were killed late Saturday August 27, 2011 in a helicopter crash in a wooded area south of Quebec City. The victims are: Yvon Beaudoin (age 65), his wife Marie-Paule Fréchette (67), their son Eric Beaudoin (43), and Eric's daughter, 8-year-old Mélizandre Beaudoin. The tragic news was reported throughout Canada including on CBC news.
Yvon Beaudoin was a participant at the Canadian Championships in 1981, 1983, 1985 and 1987. His son Eric Beaudoin was a very talented player who participated in 1981, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1988 and 1989. He won the 1983 Canadian Junior Boys title and was runner-up in the men's in 1987 and 1989. In Calgary 1988, Eric recorded the high overall average of 75.9% and finished 4th. Yvon and Marie-Paule's two other sons, Marco and Carl Beaudoin have been Quebec junior champions (like Eric was in 1981). Yvon had 5 brothers that played at least once at the Canadians: Luc Beaudoin (who finished 7th with 66.3% in 1989), Denis Beaudoin, Andre Beaudoin, Serge Beaudoin and Gaetan Beaudoin. Besides his 3 sons, many nephews and nieces also played. The Beaudoin were known also as gentlemen on and off the courts.
On behalf of Horseshoe Canada we would like to extend our deepest condoleances to the all the family.

Despite his "retirement" as a volunteer or horseshoe pitcher, it was a common scene to see Mr Dutremble as a spectator especially at the Quebec Singles Championships (he was present in 2004 - see picture). Fernand Dutremble left his mark in an unforgettable way in the Quebec horseshoe world. We extend our condoleances to the family. (See his profile in french).
