On this page are regrouped Dean’s performances in some of the major tournaments in which he took part (mostly the Canadian and Ontario Championships).

Dean McLaughlin won 12 titles in 27 appearances at the Canadian Championships. The two players that have defeated him the most are Elmer Hohl (13 times) and Walter Woodward (3 times). In 1985 he played in the Intermediate Men championship and won. Ken Smith was one of the participants in that group. Dean averaged over 80% at least 4 times. Dean has at least 176 wins through a career that covers the greatest number of years in the Canadian championship history (1937 to 1985 - 49 years). His 176 wins exclude his record for the years 1964 to 1966 (unknown) and also his participation in the 1985 Intermediate class.
Note: * indicates these figures are not absolute certitudes. ** In 1958, he set a new record with 81.93% in the round-robin. Added to his best-of-three final with Elmer Hohl, it brought his overall average to 79.0%.

Again, Dean McLaughlin's career at the Ontario championships covers probably the longest period of time (1937 to 1985). Dean was 7-time Ontario champion and never finished lower than 2nd except 1978. He participated over 20 times and his high (known) ringer percentage was 74.6%. We miss many records but from what we know Dean might have never defeated Elmer Hohl at the provincials out of about 10 games. Dean did not participate for a long period of time (1961 to 1971). He lost again some close games including a playoff for the title in 1985 against Steve Hohl which Dean lost 40-38!
In 1955 he lost 50-49 to Walt Woodward. In 1973, he lost a 134 shoe game despite throwing 109 ringers against Elmer.
World Tournament -------------------------------------------------- Year Pos. W-L Rings/S.P. R% H.G. 1951 16th 20-15 2106/2866 73.48 ? 1956 7th 26-9 1959/2630 74.49 ? -------------------------------------------------- 2 appearances 46-24 4065/5496 73.96
Dean's high games are unknown at the World Tournament.
It was reported by Harold Blackman that his 1956 game with Fernando Isais went 110 shoes.
We also know that in 1956, Dean participated in the Rocky Mountain Open in Boulder,
Colorado where he came 3rd, behind Milton Tate and Truman Standard.
In the prelims, Dean averaged 73.11% (367/502) and defeated Ted Allen 50-44 in 100 shoes (73% vs 72%).
