Jean Markle's Appreciation Night - Sept. 22, 2007

Jean Markle has been involved in horseshoe pitching, running tournaments or selling games related items for almost 40 years! As mentioned by Betty Anne Ellis, from the Hamilton Horseshoe Club: "We felt someone should recognize her contributions so we planned an appreciation night for her. Our treasurer Mike Gracey even managed to get her free limo ride to the event. We had nearly 150 people show up from all over Ontario as well as her family members nearby and from N.Y. With the help of Paul Watson, Moe McGregor and myself, we contacted people in every area of Ontario that we knew to have horseshoe clubs affiliated with Horseshoe Ontario and/or Horseshoe Canada and asked them to spread the word to their club members. We had a better turnout than most tournaments! After so many years in and around horseshoes, everyone knew Jean. I had set up a big sign in the lounge out front with pictures of Jean at horseshoe functions (our picture of the month) and a giant card for everyone to sign. THere was a basket for cards, her medal and a photo of her with 1990's Cabinet Minister of Culture and Recreation Isabel Bassett. When Jean arrived she greeted everyone and socialized a bit before dinner. After dinner, there were speeches from several parties recognizing her hard work and dedication. Some people made her awards, some sent flowers, many gave her cards. Jean made a thank you speech then her favorite band played for the evening and the dance floor was full all evening. Everyone said they had a great time and what an awesome party it was. It was good to see Jean recognized for all that work."
Congratulations for organizing this great party!
Thank you Jean Markle for all those years of dedication!
Jean was inducted in 1987 as a charter member of our Horseshoe Canada Hall of Fame, along with Elmer Hohl, Dean McLaughlin, Jack Adams and Walter Kane. That tells a lot about her major impact on the game. See Jean Markle's profile in the Horseshoe Canada Hall of Fame section.
